Red Blend: Cinsault, Grenache, Tinta Barocca

Region
The Paardeberg mountain rises above the rolling wheat fields on the southern border of
the Swartland. Forgotten for decades and never considered as a premium wine region, it is home to many old vineyards and traditional, lesser-known varieties. These vines are hardy, low yielding, and produce grapes of exceptional quality.

Grapes and Vineyards
The Cinsault and Grenache were sourced from vineyards growing on well-drained, granite soils. Cinsault was known as the work-horse and of the rare Grenache only very few old vineyards remain. Tinta Barocca has proved itself in the Swartland already for decades and completes this traditional blend. Here it is sourced from a warmer clay-rich vineyard.

Vinification
Cinsault and Grenache are perfect partners and natural yeasts completed a partially wholebunch co-fermentation. After 6 months, the Tinta Barocca is blended together into large old foudres and followed by another 6-month resting period, allowing the flavours to marry and wine to mature. Bottled un-fined and unfiltered with minimum use of sulphites.

Winemaker’s comments
This is a wine with natural purity and elegance. It is unbelievably drinkable thanks to Cinsault and Grenache contributing to more than 85% of the blend. Delicate rose petal aromas leads to fresh berry and aromatic fynbos. The palate is loaded with juicy red and dark berry fruit and an earthy edge of pomegranate and black tea. Tinta Barocca completes this classic Swartland blend by adding darker tones and a fleshy and dense structure with gripping tannins, finishing fresh and tight. A unique and charismatic wine,
quite pleasurable in its youth, but worth the wait with further aging.
